Newry, Mourne and Down District Council partnered with the voluntary sector to help Down Community Transport and Newry and Mourne Community Transport obtain £200,000 each from the Strategic Stakeholder Forum. The funds supported the purchase of a new mini bus for each provider and the hiring of an additional driver to address rising service demand.

In the past year, the two organisations transported nearly 11,000 passengers across almost 3,400 journeys. They now employ 16 drivers and operate 19 mini buses, supplemented by volunteer drivers. Their Dial-A-Lift service assists people facing difficulties with public transport access.

Councillor Philip Campbell, chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, noted the essential role of these providers in rural areas for individuals with mobility issues. He highlighted their contribution to health and wellbeing amid past funding challenges.

Sheileen Brady, manager of Down Community Transport, credited the council's support for enabling fleet updates, service enhancements and job creation. The investment improved reliability and reduced social isolation.

Stephen Yeomans, chief executive of Newry and Mourne Community Transport, stated that the funding modernised vehicles and expanded services for people with mobility needs, supporting community participation.
