Benburb Farmer Stabilises Enterprise with Poultry and Tech Upgrades
Jonny Allen operates a farm in Benburb with 150 head of cattle and 56,000 chickens across two houses. The enterprise achieved financial stability after introducing poultry production and energy-saving technologies. Allen keeps an 18-year-old cow originally from his father's stock.
Allen inherited the cattle farm from his father Edwin in 2009 following Edwin's death from cancer. The operation ran at a loss with an overdraft of 25,000 pounds at that time. Edwin had managed suckler cows through artificial insemination.
Allen attended Greenmount College and Harper Adams for agricultural studies. In 2017 he began poultry production under a 10-year contract with Moy Park that included house payments and production guarantees.
Allen modified a Dutch heat exchanger in the poultry houses to cut gas use by 40 percent and reduce ammonia emissions. The company adopted his changes for global sales. He added a catchment device to vent air and capture waste.
Around 2019 Allen installed solar panels on poultry house roofs to pursue carbon neutrality, a goal reached this month. The panels allow electricity export.
Allen received multiple awards from Moy Park, including Innovator of the Year. He placed as runner-up for Poultry Farmer of the Year with Waitrose against larger UK operations.
