Plans to complete a key section of Omagh's Riverside Walk have remained unresolved for more than a decade. The outstanding section is expected to cost more than £1 million. No timetable has been confirmed for the work.

Many walkers use existing sections of the route through Strathroy and Hunters Crescent. The path follows the river towards St Lucia Barracks and the Showgrounds Retail Park. The walkway forms part of the Highway to Health.

Two years ago, proposals to extend the walkway and add a pedestrian bridge towards Gortin Road stalled during negotiations between Drumragh Parish and Fermanagh and Omagh District Council. The council had also sought a land transfer within the St Lucia Barracks site to help complete the walk.

The first phase of the walking and cycling route opened in summer 2010. It was initially aimed at maximising the amenity of Omagh's riverside areas. The then chairman of Omagh District Council, Declan McAleer, who is now a West Tyrone MLA, opened the route. Since then, the path has provided a convenient route from the town centre to the Showgrounds Retail Park.

The existing walkway now offers views across the river towards construction work at the new Strule Shared Education Campus.

The council is in the process of appointing a consultant to carry out feasibility studies on the remaining sections.
