Antrim and Newtownabbey Council Event Advances Autism Inclusion in Local Sports
Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council collaborated with Autism NI to hold an event on autism inclusion in sport. Titled Autism in Sport: An Evening of Learning and Inclusion, it occurred on 25 February at 7pm in Mossley Mill. More than 60 representatives from local sports clubs took part, including coaches, teachers, and volunteers.
The gathering received funding from the PEACEPLUS programme, administered by the Special EU Programmes Body to support peace-building initiatives in Northern Ireland. Speakers at the event included Christine Kearney of Autism NI, Mayor Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick, and Deputy Mayor Councillor Julie Gilmour. Additional contributors were Shane McCann of Ulster GAA, Jason Browning and Stephen Watson of the Irish Football Association, Denise Watson as host, Adam Keefe of Belfast Giants, and Shel Laffin of Ulster Rugby.
Adam Keefe outlined accommodations at SSE Arena for autistic spectators. These consist of sensory bags equipped with fidget toys, weighted lap pads, ear defenders, and wobble cushions. The venue provides familiarisation tours and digital resources detailing match-day experiences.
Participants received guidance on implementing inclusive approaches for coaches, clubs, and volunteers. Autism NI offers support services across Northern Ireland to enhance opportunities for autistic individuals in community activities.
