Armagh Police Conduct Speed Checks in City Hotspots
The Armagh Neighbourhood Policing team carried out speed operations across Armagh city on Friday, February 20. Officers deployed laser speed devices at several locations identified as speeding hotspots, including College Hill near Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, Mullinure Lane, Cavanacaw Road, and Victoria Street.
At College Hill, adjacent to The Royal School Armagh and Armstrong Primary School, police confirmed signage indicated a 30mph limit. The checks followed safety concerns raised by teachers, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times. Most vehicles complied with the limit, while drivers exceeding it slightly received advice and reminders.
Officers then relocated to Mullinure Lane at the entrance to Deanery Demesne, a 30mph residential zone. One driver was recorded exceeding 40mph and faced enforcement action. All other vehicles observed were within the limit.
Operations continued on Cavanacaw Road, a residential area often used as a shortcut, and Victoria Street, a busy arterial route into the city centre. All drivers at these locations complied with speed limits during the checks.
Constable Thompson stated the operations focused on speed awareness to improve road safety. Police presence aimed to remind drivers of limits without primarily issuing tickets. The team collaborates with the Driver and Vehicle Agency on problem areas and invites public reports via online form or by calling 101.
