Lowe Presbyterian Church Group Crafts 2,200 Poppies for Remembrance Display
A church group in County Tyrone has created 2,200 knitted and crocheted poppies for Remembrance Day displays at Lowe Presbyterian Church in Beragh.
Work began in January, with members of the church and knitting group contributing 1,467 hours and using 116 balls of wool. Many of the wool donations came from men in the congregation.
The displays include a large poppy fall made from approximately 900 flowers attached to netting, a pulpit cascade, and a ballgown constructed from 115 poppies. Other items include a cushion, wreaths, and decorations on milk churns.
Purple poppies in the display acknowledge the role of animals in war. A child's tennis racquet was also covered in poppies.
Outside, large poppies on stalks were placed in the ground. Girls' Brigade members coloured in poppies for bunting, and Boys' Brigade members made poppies from the bottoms of plastic bottles.
The group also produced brooch-backed poppies for sale, with proceeds supporting the church.
The display honours five men from the congregation who died in the Second World War: Tom Rodgers, Harold Moorby, Walter Thompson, Jack Wallace and Tom Patterson.
Visitors are welcome to view the display and stay for refreshments.
Jennifer Stewart, a group member, said people who had not knitted for years took part, producing a wide variety of poppy shapes and sizes.
