A 30-year-old Coleraine man has been given a six-month suspended sentence for assaulting his father and damaging an electronic tag.

Stephen McGlinchey, of Lisnablagh Road, admitted the offences when he appeared before Coleraine Magistrates Court. The charges related to an incident on October 30, 2025.

Police were called to the home of the complainant, who told officers he had been assaulted by his son after an argument. Officers observed injuries to the man, including from being kicked to the head.

When McGlinchey was arrested, police found he had damaged an electronic tag he was wearing by attempting to cut it off.

Defence counsel Sean Doherty told the court his client deeply regretted his actions.

Deputy District Judge John Rea said the circumstances were disturbing and that the custody threshold had been crossed. He imposed a sentence of six months in custody, suspended for two years, and ordered McGlinchey to pay £300 in compensation to the injured party.
