A 41-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Paul Mackin Junior in north Belfast.

Thomas McCauley, of Queens Parade, Belfast, appeared at Laganside court on Friday. He faces charges of murder, false imprisonment and grievous bodily harm against two women in connection with the same incident.

Mr Mackin, aged 44, died in hospital on Wednesday after police responded to reports of an assault at a house in the Duncairn Parade area on Monday.

A PSNI officer told the court she was able to connect the accused to the charges. McCauley confirmed he understood the charges.

No application for bail was made and he was remanded in custody to appear again on August 21.

A police spokesperson said a file is being prepared for the Public Prosecution Service regarding additional alleged offences, and all charges will be subject to review.
