A £19.5 million upgrade at Ballinrees Water Treatment Works near Coleraine has been completed, introducing new infrastructure to boost drinking water standards and network resilience.

The project delivered a new treatment building, additional emergency storage, and a pumping station. It serves the Coleraine area, extending towards Portrush, Ballymoney, and parts of Limavady and Londonderry.

NI Water said the work began in March 2023 and was sequenced to keep the plant fully operational. New assets were built, commissioned, and tested before being brought online, ensuring no customers lost supply.

The investment aims to help the network meet Drinking Water Regulations. The chief drinking water inspector at the Northern Ireland Environment Agency said the upgrade will ensure compliance with enforcement notices, strengthen regulatory adherence, and safeguard public health.

NI Water’s infrastructure delivery director said the scheme was delivered on time and within budget, future-proofing infrastructure for customers, businesses, and tourism.

The contractor was DLJ Water Limited, with project management from RPS Tetratech.
