Ballygawley Wastewater Plant Gains 33% Capacity After £8m NI Water Upgrade
NI Water has finished an £8 million upgrade to the Ballygawley Wastewater Treatment Works in Tyrone. The facility, positioned off Tullybryan Road and Rameen Drive, now handles 33 percent more capacity. This supports new housing and business growth in the area.
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins inspected the site after work began in summer 2023. The improvements meet stricter environmental discharge standards. They reduce pollution entering the Ballygawley River, which flows into the River Blackwater and Lough Neagh.
The plant stayed operational during construction. Operators kept existing equipment in use and added new components to control costs. The system employs energy-efficient treatment methods.
More than 260 workers contributed to the project over its duration. NI Water informed nearby residents with newsletters about construction traffic increases.
GRAHAM acted as principal contractor. Local firms TES Group from Cookstown, Tetra Tech RPS, and Doran Consulting from Belfast also participated.
