Infrastructure Minister Tours Completed Upgrade at Ballygawley Wastewater Plant
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins visited Ballygawley Wastewater Treatment Works in Tyrone to inspect the finished £8 million upgrade. The site lies off Tullybryan Road and Rameen Drive. Construction began in summer 2023.
The improvements increase the plant's capacity by about 33 percent. This expansion supports new housing and business development in Ballygawley. The facility now meets stricter standards for wastewater discharge into the environment.
Water quality in the Ballygawley River stands to benefit. The river flows into the River Blackwater and eventually Lough Neagh. NI Water operates the plant as part of regional wastewater services.
More than 260 workers contributed to the project at peak times. Main contractor GRAHAM led the effort, with involvement from TES Group in Cookstown, Tetra Tech RPS and Doran Consulting in Belfast.
The upgrade kept the existing plant running during construction. Operators retained usable assets and added new ones to control costs. The process uses a standard method designed for low energy use.
Liz Kimmins described the project as central to her infrastructure priorities. NI Water chief executive Sara Venning noted gains for customers, development and the local river. The company issued newsletters to nearby residents about construction traffic and thanked them for cooperation.
