A pilot silent disco for older people took place in Derry in June 2026. It was delivered as part of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Age Friendly Programme in partnership with the Western Health and Social Care Trust’s Multidisciplinary Team and Older People North West.

Participants from across the region wore wireless headphones and danced to music in an inclusive setting. The event was designed to promote physical activity, build confidence and encourage social connection among older adults.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Grace Uí Niallais, said the pilot offered an inclusive environment where older people could enjoy music and interaction. She added that positive ageing involves tackling isolation and building confidence as well as staying physically active.

Age Friendly Co-ordinator Pauline O’Neill reported that the pilot had exceeded expectations. She said it provided evidence that movement-based activities bring benefits such as stronger social participation, greater confidence and gentle physical activity, along with laughter.

Feedback from both participants and staff was positive. Many expressed an interest in attending similar events in the future. The council and the Western Trust said they would now look to build on the momentum generated by the pilot to shape future Age Friendly programmes.
