Mournes Week opens hidden history and water heritage to the public
A week-long programme of guided walks, tours and family activities will open the Mourne Mountains’ hidden history and engineering heritage to the public starting Sunday 28 June. Organised by NI Water, Mourne Heritage Trust, the National Trust and local groups, Mournes Week is designed to connect people with the landscape, heritage and conservation work of the area.
Highlights include an evening talk and guided walk at Silent Valley Mountain Park on Thursday 2 July, focusing on the industrial and engineering legacy of the region. Visitors will also have the rare opportunity to tour Fofanny Water Treatment Works to learn about the process that turns raw mountain water into drinking water. Other events explore the history of Water Town and sections of the Mourne Wall.
Gary Presho, NI Water area supply manager, said the programme offers a window into the rich history, engineering achievements and conservation work that make the Mournes significant. He noted that working with partners through the Forever Mournes initiative helps people connect with and protect the landscape for future generations.
Places are limited and advance booking is recommended through the official Mournes Week booking page.
