Sinn Féin will contest the next Assembly election in South Down with three candidates for the first time. The party launched its campaign at a meeting in Atticall Community and Sports Centre on Wednesday evening, selecting sitting MLAs Sinéad Ennis and Cathy Mason and former Newry, Mourne and Down Council chairperson Michael Rice.

Vice President Michelle O’Neill attended the launch and said the party had grown substantially in the constituency over the past decade. She stated that Sinn Féin now has the support to secure a third seat in the May election.

Ennis said she would push for more investment in local towns and villages to help small businesses and create opportunities. She also highlighted the need for improved childcare services to support working families.

Mason emphasised the importance of better healthcare access, affordable housing, and educational facilities. She argued that young people must have the chance to build their futures locally.

Rice said his background gave him a strong understanding of rural and community issues. He pledged to work for local families and businesses as part of the Sinn Féin team.

Each candidate framed the campaign as an opportunity to make history by returning the largest Sinn Féin delegation ever from South Down.
