A man threw masonry at a speed enforcement van in Coagh, County Tyrone, causing extensive damage on 22 June. The incident occurred on Ballinderry Bridge Road at around 2.50pm when a Road Safety Partnership camera van was stationary.

Police have charged a 39-year-old man with criminal damage, common assault, and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He is scheduled to appear at Dungannon Magistrates' Court on Friday 17 July.

The accused is alleged to have approached the van, smashed several windows with pieces of masonry, and shouted abuse before fleeing the scene. The driver, who was inside the vehicle, was not physically injured but police described the incident as a frightening ordeal that lasted several minutes.

Mid-Ulster Chief Inspector Trevor Campbell said safety camera deployments are intended to reduce speeds and prevent serious collisions. He noted that vans are stationed at locations with a history of crashes or community concerns, and that speeding is among the ‘fatal five’ factors in road deaths.

Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam or mobile phone footage to come forward, quoting reference 1070 of 22/06/26. Reports can be made by calling 101 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
