Creggan Mural Celebrates Youth Unity Through Sport
A new mural has been completed in Creggan, Derry, as part of a project using sport to connect young people from different backgrounds. The artwork depicts young girls wearing the colours of Séan Dolan's GAC and Trojans YCG playing together, with the logo of local health initiative Health For Life in the background.
The mural emerged from workshops led by Féile and Peaball, involving participants from Séan Dolan's GAC, Trojans YCG, and the YMCA in Drumahoe. Ruairí O'Connell, Project Coordinator with Féile, stated that the young people quickly discovered how much they had in common once sport gave them a starting point, and that the shared experience created something lasting for the community.
The project is financed through PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body, which supports initiatives that promote inclusion and shared futures. The Creggan mural is one of several public artworks being delivered under this scheme, with young people taking a leading role in shaping the creative vision.
Organisers say the focus was not on competition but on values such as community, friendship, respect, and belonging, and on recognising the role both clubs play in nurturing future generations in the area.
