Young Derry Men Paint Mural Promoting Respect for Women
A group of young men from Hillcrest Community Centre in Derry created a mural displaying messages such as Enough is Enough, Real Men Respect Women, and Let’s Be the Generation That Stops It.
Waterside Neighbourhood Partnership secured funding for the project from The Executive Office Change Fund via Derry City and Strabane District Council. FUSE arts facilitated the work in partnership with Peaball and Foyle Women’s Information Network.
The artwork shows the young men holding placards with the messages they developed together. It targets their peers to prompt reflection on attitudes and behaviours.
Alison Wallace, Strategy Manager at Waterside Neighbourhood Partnership, stated the funding enabled young men to learn from each other and use creativity to advance respect and equality. She noted the partners helped craft messages against harmful attitudes.
Marc Pyne, the facilitator, said the project allowed the young men to voice opposition to violence towards women. He highlighted its timeliness and potential to inspire community change.
