A woman has been remanded in custody after appearing at Derry Magistrates’ Court charged with threatening to kill two people and assault, following an incident in a private home.

The court heard that on 22 June, police received a 999 call from a woman reporting that Naomi Graham, 43, of Rockmills in the Strand Road area, had entered her property demanding money. The caller was not at the address, but her two adult children aged 21 and 19, a 14-year-old, and a two-year-old grandchild were present.

Graham allegedly told the children she would kill their mother and father. The 21-year-old daughter said Graham was unpredictable and claimed the family owed her £2,000.

When the alleged victim arrived, Graham refused to leave, telling her she was owed money. Police had to escort her from the property. The court was told the two women had occasionally lent each other money and that the alleged victim had experienced a campaign of harassment over the previous three weeks, including voicemails.

During a police interview, Graham stated she was a regular visitor and had let herself in to charge her phone, but accepted she refused to leave.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott argued the situation was more nuanced than outlined. He said Graham was in a relationship with a relative of the alleged victim and had been visiting him. He acknowledged her behaviour had got out of hand.

Police opposed bail, citing a risk of reoffending given Graham’s 30 previous convictions and the unsuitability of the proposed bail address. The deputy district judge refused bail and remanded her in custody to appear again on 16 July.
