A woman has been refused bail at Derry Magistrates' Court after being charged with assaulting a pregnant woman and her partner.

Hannah Duddy, 31, of Lisnavar Court, Derry, faces two counts of assault, making threats, criminal damage, disorderly behaviour and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to cause actual bodily harm. The charges relate to an incident on July 28.

Police were called to a report that a pregnant woman and her partner had been assaulted. The court was told that Duddy allegedly threatened the couple with a knife, kicked in a door, and said she would kill herself and then kill the man. An injured party is said to have grabbed her and walked her outside, after which she allegedly kicked the door in again, striking him in the face. The pregnant woman was also allegedly punched in the stomach.

During her arrest, police claimed Duddy was verbally abusive towards officers.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said Duddy disputes the assault and offensive weapon charges. He added that both alleged injured parties are "well known to the court".

Police opposed bail, citing Duddy's 124 previous convictions, 75 of which were assessed as relevant, and 21 previous breaches of bail.

District Judge Suzanne Rice described the charges as "very serious" and noted that Duddy is currently on probation for similar alleged offences. Bail was refused and Duddy was remanded in custody to appear again on August 20.
