A 31-year-old woman has been granted bail after a court hearing into allegations she attacked a pregnant neighbour in Derry.

Hannah Duddy, of Lisnavar Court, faces charges of threatening and disorderly behaviour, criminal damage, possession of an offensive weapon and two counts of common assault. The alleged offences took place on July 28.

A judge heard that Duddy attempted to force entry to a flat by kicking the front door before entering the kitchen with a knife. A man at the address removed a seven-inch blade from her and took her into a communal hallway, the court was told.

Prosecutors alleged that Duddy then tried to get back inside, scratching the man's face through a partially open door. His girlfriend, who was four months pregnant, later told police she feared for the life of her unborn child.

The court heard further allegations that Duddy grabbed the woman and tore a rosary necklace from her neck, then punched her in the lower left abdomen. She also allegedly made comments that the woman did not deserve to have a child or a womb and threatened to harm the unborn baby.

When police arrived, Duddy allegedly directed sectarian and homophobic slurs at officers and warned the woman of further repercussions after her release.

Defence counsel said Duddy had initially contacted police to report that she had been assaulted, and argued that any scuffle had involved self-defence.

The judge released Duddy on bail to an address in another part of Derry, with a curfew and a prohibition on contact with either alleged victim.
