Derry City and Strabane District Council is set to explore the introduction of a shuttle bus service for next year's Cemetery Sunday to improve access for people with mobility problems. The proposal was raised at the council's Environment and Regeneration Committee meeting in June following feedback from this year's Blessing of the Graves on 7 June.

Sinn Féin councillor Emma McGinley suggested a shuttle bus from a nearby location, such as a school, to the City Cemetery. She said the council already gives blue badge holders advance notice to book parking spaces, but many visitors struggle with mobility without holding a blue badge. McGinley asked for a meeting of the council's Cemetery Working Group to discuss the idea with the church, which organises the service.

UUP alderman Derek Hussey described the shuttle bus idea as sensible, agreeing that many people have mobility issues but no blue badge. SDLP councillor Rory Farrell said feedback from this year's event had been positive overall, but parking remained an ongoing concern, particularly for those with limited mobility. He supported arranging shuttle services from off-site parking in cooperation with the Diocese.

Director of Environment and Regeneration Karen Phillips confirmed the council would facilitate a meeting of the working group to work with event organisers on improvements for 2025.
