Medics from the Ulster Hospital have raised a combined total of more than £20,000 for Northern Ireland’s only pancreatic cancer charity by completing a 48-hour cycling relay around the region.

The staff took part in the Pedal the Periphery 2026 event, which requires teams to cycle approximately 480 miles around the perimeter of Northern Ireland within two days. The money will go to NIPANC, the charity that provides information, support and advocacy for patients and families affected by pancreatic cancer.

Consultant physician Dr Eleanor Campbell joined the all-female JB Fitness Flyers team, which comprised 13 women with widely varying cycling experience. Some had borrowed bikes for the occasion, others were returning to fitness after maternity leave, and one was continuing her own cancer recovery. That team has so far raised £7,250, with additional donations still expected.

Another team that included consultant gastroenterologist Dr Grant Caddy collected £13,200. He said pancreatic cancer remains one of the most difficult cancers to diagnose and treat, making the work of NIPANC particularly important.

Dr Campbell described the experience as pushing participants well beyond their comfort zones, but said the cause made every effort worthwhile.
