Investigation Launched Over Suspected Counterfeit Toy in Omagh
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has begun an investigation after receiving a complaint about a potentially dangerous children's toy bought in Omagh.
A parent reported that her five-year-old son purchased a 'dumpling squishie' for £6 from a local shop. Upon opening the package, the toy emitted a strong chemical odour, prompting the mother to remove it from her home immediately.
The packaging displayed what appeared to be counterfeit CE safety markings, according to the parent. She contacted both Trading Standards and the council's environmental health department, expressing concern that other retailers in Omagh may be selling similar items.
A council spokesperson confirmed receipt of the complaint and said the matter is under investigation. No further details were provided.
In recent weeks, other parts of the UK have issued warnings about counterfeit squishie toys. Authorities in Glasgow seized more than 5,900 such items from a warehouse.
Trading Standards advises shoppers to look for clear UKCA or CE markings, age recommendations, safety warnings and manufacturer details. Missing information, unusually low prices, strong smells or the absence of packaging can indicate counterfeit goods.
