Teen remanded in custody over Derry disorder and assault charges
A 16-year-old boy has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrates' Court facing charges of rioting, witness intimidation and assault.
The youth, who cannot be named because of his age, appeared on Monday, June 15, in connection with incidents on June 10 and June 13.
On June 13, police received reports shortly after 6.30pm of a group of around ten masked youths throwing missiles at the Fountain Estate in the Bishop Street and Nailor’s Row area. Officers attended and the group dispersed, but the court heard the accused was identified on CCTV attempting to conceal his identity near the scene.
He was also charged over a separate incident on June 10, when he allegedly entered a shop and threatened a female worker with a screwdriver.
Bail was opposed by the Police Service of Northern Ireland, citing the teenager’s 15 previous convictions. District Judge Suzanne Rice described his record as appalling and said she was not minded to grant bail, given the need to protect the public. He was remanded to appear at the Youth Court at Bishop Street on June 16.
The charges, including disorderly and riotous behaviour, will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
Four other males were arrested as part of the investigation into the June 13 disorder. A 14-year-old was released unconditionally, while two 13-year-olds and another 16-year-old were released pending a report to the PPS.
