A student from Ballymena has successfully completed a year-long youth leadership initiative run by Belfast City Airport. Jenna Louise Dowds, who attends Slemish College, was among 31 young people to graduate from the IGNITE programme, which concluded its seventh cycle.

The programme, launched in 2019, brings together teenagers from diverse backgrounds to work with youth organisations, charities, businesses and industry professionals. Participants work towards an NLP Diploma in Personal and Career Development while engaging in workshops, mentoring and interactive activities designed to build confidence and communication skills.

Michelle Hatfield, Chief People and Marketing Officer at the airport, said the initiative was created to help young people realise their potential, and that each cohort demonstrates that potential. She noted the airport’s commitment to community investment and nurturing talent through such programmes.

Graduates said the experience provided opportunities to meet new people and learn from guest speakers. One participant described it as unforgettable, with the key lesson being to put oneself forward and be confident. Another said the programme was a game changer, altering their view of leadership to include being a team player.

Jenna Louise Dowds’ graduation highlights the access local young people in Mid and East Antrim have to regional development opportunities. As the latest graduates move into further education and employment, the programme continues to expand its network of young leaders equipped with practical skills and experience.
