Three Remanded After Portadown Disorder
Three people have been remanded in custody after public disorder in Portadown, County Armagh, on Wednesday, June 10.
The unrest followed a knife attack in north Belfast in which Stephen Ogilvie lost an eye and suffered deep cuts to his head, face, and back.
Martynas Girkis, 28, of Festival Road, appeared at Craigavon Magistrates' Court via video link charged with failing to remove a disguise when asked, obstructing police, and resisting police. The court heard that police encountered a crowd of masked men in the town centre that evening. When Girkis refused to remove his mask, he was arrested. He then broke free and fled before being found on a towpath later. A black ski mask was recovered from him. His solicitor said he had lived in Northern Ireland for 15 years, spoke fluent English, and had no record. The solicitor argued there was no suggestion of riotous behaviour. District Judge Michael Ranaghan denied bail, stating that being part of a masked gang in a public street during an ongoing public order situation was sufficient grounds.
Alliyah Harper, 24, of Ballybay View, was charged with disorderly behaviour and possessing gloves and masonry with intent to damage property. A police officer said she was seen in a crowd on High Street with her face covered, allegedly shouting racially abusive remarks at officers. She was then observed placing masonry onto the road on Mandeville Street. When arrested, she had a pair of black gloves. Her barrister said she had been caught up in the gathering while walking home. She had a previous conviction for criminal damage in 2024. Judge Ranaghan refused bail due to a serious risk of further public disorder.
A 21-year-old Portadown man also faced a charge of disorderly behaviour. The judge warned him to ignore social media posts urging people to gather unlawfully.
All three were remanded in custody, and their cases were adjourned to July 10.
