The Northern Ireland Judicial Appointments Commission (NIJAC) has begun a series of public information events for people considering applying to become lay magistrates.

The first of these live sessions took place in Coleraine this week. NIJAC described it as an opportunity for prospective applicants to learn about the role and the selection process.

Attendees heard directly from serving lay magistrates about their own experiences. Members of the Selection Oversight Committee offered guidance on completing applications and approaching selection interviews. NIJAC staff were also present to answer practical questions.

Three further events are scheduled across the region. Each will begin at 6pm.

The next will be held on 15 June at the Silverbirch Hotel in Omagh. It will be followed on 17 June at the Belmont Hotel in Banbridge. The final live event is set for 18 June at the Culloden Estate in Holywood, outside Belfast.

Anyone interested in attending one of the remaining sessions can register on the NIJAC website. The commission said it encourages all potential applicants to take advantage of the chance to speak directly with people involved in the process.
