Executive Ministers Visit Mater Hospital After Racist Attacks on Staff
The First Minister, deputy First Minister and Health Minister visited the Mater Hospital in north Belfast to express solidarity with healthcare workers following reports of threats, intimidation and racist attacks.
Michelle O’Neill, Emma Little-Pengelly and Mike Nesbitt met with hospital staff and management during the visit to hear first-hand about their experiences and to thank them for their continued commitment to patient care.
Ms O’Neill said the Executive is deeply concerned by reports from staff, particularly those from ethnic minority communities. She stressed that there is no justification for abuse or racism directed at health workers, whether on duty or travelling to and from work.
The First Minister added that the Executive will continue to work with the Department of Health and trusts to ensure staff are protected and that any abuse is challenged.
Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly said the visit was intended to show full support for Health and Social Care staff. She said threats, intimidation and racist abuse will not be tolerated and those responsible should face the full consequences of the law.
Health Minister Mike Nesbitt highlighted the vital contribution of international workers to the health service, stating that without them the system would collapse. He condemned the racist and xenophobic behaviour and said all staff are entitled to live and work free from harm.
