Free parking will be available at the multi-storey car park of the former Flagship Centre in Bangor from July 1 to September 1.

The Northhold Group, which is redeveloping the derelict shopping centre into the Marina Village complex, has spent £10,000 clearing drains and repainting parking bay lines to prepare the facility. The three-floor car park has capacity for 600 vehicles and represents the first completed stage of the wider development.

Alistair Smith, project director for Marina Village, described the opening as a key milestone and expressed gratitude for community support. He said that while some ongoing improvement work may not yet be visible, the decision to open the car park early was practical. After the free period ends in September, charges will be introduced but will remain in line with typical parking costs in Bangor.

Complete Parking Services has been appointed to operate the facility. Smith stated the company was selected because its community focused ethos aligned with the development’s objectives, in contrast to firms that rely heavily on clamping and fines.

The Marina Village project aims to create a hub for family entertainment, indoor sports, retail, food and beverage outlets, office space, healthcare services and a creche. Planning for the 157,000 square foot site will continue over the summer, with further announcements on operators and upcoming phases expected in the coming months.
