Ballymena Showgrounds to get 3G pitch after planning approval
Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s Planning Committee has approved plans for a new high-performance artificial surface at Ballymena Showgrounds, the home of Ballymena United Football Club.
The installation of the 3G hybrid pitch is due to begin in the summer of 2027. Ahead of that, the club is carrying out extensive maintenance on the existing grass pitch to limit fixture disruption during the 2026/27 season.
A club spokesperson said Ballymena United welcomed the decision and was continuing to engage with the council, local businesses and other stakeholders on long-term enhancements to the Showgrounds complex, as the venue approaches a century of senior football.
Alderman Stewart McDonald, who sits on the planning committee, praised the approval and noted the application had progressed without objection from statutory consultees, with planning officers recommending consent. He highlighted the work of Councillor Matthew Armstrong in driving the proposal forward.
McDonald said the investment would help keep one of the borough’s top sporting facilities in good condition for years to come. All-weather surfaces allow for much greater use across the year and reduce cancellations caused by bad weather, creating more opportunities for local clubs, schools and community groups, he added.
The council planning committee gave the green light at a recent meeting after considering a sound application, McDonald said.
The club has not announced a contractor for the project but expects the new surface to be laid during the 2027 summer break.
