The dining room at South Tyrone Hospital in Dungannon is set to close and be replaced by a new café in the main foyer, Health Minister Mike Nesbitt has confirmed.

Mr Nesbitt told the Assembly that the existing canteen is significantly underused and operates at a financial loss. Its current location is also less accessible for staff, patients and visitors, he said.

The Southern Health and Social Care Trust is therefore developing a new facility that will offer hot and cold food and drinks. The minister said the café is expected to open in late August and will provide a more convenient and sustainable service.

A dedicated rest area for staff will be retained, equipped with hot meal vending machines, microwaves and hot water, Mr Nesbitt added. The model is consistent with catering on other Trust sites, and feedback from engagement with staff, service users and visitors has helped shape the final arrangements.

The minister was responding to a question from DUP MLA Deborah Erskine, who represents Fermanagh and South Tyrone and had asked about future canteen provision at the hospital.

The closure plan has drawn criticism locally. DUP councillor Clement Cuthbertson said the current facility provides an important service for healthcare workers on long shifts and for families visiting patients. He described the canteen as a vital support.

In March, Mid Ulster District Council unanimously backed a motion calling for the retention of the dining room at the hospital.
