Gortin Road closures avoided for Tyrone-Mayo GAA match
Motorists heading to Healy Park on Sunday will not face roadworks closures on the Gortin Road, the Department for Infrastructure has confirmed. The Tyrone versus Mayo All-Ireland fixture is expected to draw around 10,000 supporters.
The Omagh route is currently undergoing £4.5 million dualling works from its Mountjoy Road junction. The project started last summer and is not due for completion before September.
Two weekend closures are scheduled for the same stretch: from June 5 to the morning of June 8, and from June 20 to the morning of June 22. No works are planned for Sunday, June 14.
Councillor Barry McElduff said he contacted the department about potential disruption on match day. A spokesperson confirmed that no road closures will take place on that date.
Some traffic delays are still possible, the department warned, as the scheme remains unfinished. Drivers have reported long hold-ups since construction began. Underground gas, water and electricity services have complicated the work. The road is being widened to four lanes to serve the new Strule Shared Education Campus, which opens in September 2028.
