The Presbyterian Church in Ireland’s General Assembly opened this morning, with safeguarding failures set to dominate discussions.

The gathering comes months after Moderator Rev Trevor Gribben resigned when an internal review uncovered significant shortcomings in central safeguarding functions for children and vulnerable adults from 2009 to 2022.

Police are now examining 101 referrals, and the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland has launched a statutory inquiry.

Acting-Clerk Rev Dr David Allen said the assembly would address many aspects of church life, but safeguarding would feature prominently. He expressed hope for prayerful and fruitful talks.

The four-day meeting brings together ministers and elders from over 500 congregations across Ireland, along with international guests from the Middle East, Spain, Hungary, Malawi, and Kenya.

Debate on the General Council’s report, which includes details from the Safeguarding Development Committee, is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

On Wednesday, members will discuss reports from task groups established in response to the crisis, including one set up by a special assembly in December to examine governance, culture, and integrity.

Proceedings are being live-streamed on the church’s website.
