New veterans support line opens in Belfast with UK minister visit
A new helpline for veterans seeking assistance with benefits and welfare services has begun operation in Belfast. The Veterans Support Line NI provides a dedicated freephone number and a text service, staffed by personnel familiar with the specific challenges of military life.
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons hosted the UK Minister for Veterans and People, Louise Sandher-Jones, during a visit to the support line team. Ministers observed the service in action and discussed the pathway it offers to statutory support.
The department notes the service is designed to be trauma-informed, aiming to remove obstacles veterans might face when engaging with public services. Callers can access information on benefits eligibility and signposting to other aid.
Minister Lyons said the line offers a clear route for veterans into the department’s services, delivered by staff who understand military experiences. Minister Sandher-Jones stated the initiative represents progress in ensuring serving personnel, veterans and their families obtain housing, welfare and wider support without delays or difficulties. She acknowledged the cooperation between the two administrations on the project.
The freephone number is 0800 158 5556. Those preferring text contact can send the word ADVICE to 07860 042576. Further guidance is available on the NI Direct website.
