Belfast City Council has approved a new policy that requires Irish and English signage on council property.

The measure, backed by £1.9 million in spending, will place bilingual text on bin lorries, council buildings, the International Convention Centre and litter bins.

The policy covers all areas of council operations and applies from the date of adoption.

Incoming Lord Mayor Róis-Máire Donnelly is an Irish speaker.

Previous Lord Mayors of Belfast have also spoken Irish.
