Belfast Author Publishes YA Novel Exploring Intergenerational Trauma
Author Stephen Daly has published a young adult novel titled The Last Death Poet. The book follows a 16-year-old who moves from London to Belfast and begins experiencing visions of the past.
Daly developed the story after watching riots near his family's home. He said he was concerned that his nieces and nephews would witness street violence similar to what he saw growing up.
The novel addresses how trauma from the Troubles continues to affect younger generations. Daly stated that many people who lived through the conflict carry unacknowledged wounds that are passed down silently.
The protagonist connects family secrets to events from Belfast's past. The story also explores queer identity alongside these themes.
Daly noted that Belfast has become busier with more tourist attractions since he left the city after the Good Friday Agreement. He said divisive politics remain but gradual change is occurring.
Daly is working on a second novel set in East Belfast that will examine pressures of masculinity on teenage boys.
