Northern Ireland's Veterans Commissioner will lead a 60-mile walk across all six counties between 1 and 6 June.

The route marks the approach to the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Funds raised will go to the Somme Association in Newtownards and Air Ambulance NI.

Daily stages are scheduled as follows: 1 June from Cullybackey to Broughshane in Antrim; 2 June from Annalong to Kilkeel in Down; 3 June from Armagh to Portadown in Armagh; 4 June from Brookeborough to Enniskillen in Fermanagh; 5 June from Dungannon to Cookstown in Tyrone; 6 June from Castlerock to Portstewart in Londonderry.

Commissioner David Johnstone has invited veterans, their families and supporters to join any stage and to raise money for the two charities.

Office staff Alan Murphy and Rachael Harger will also take part.

About 100 people have registered so far.

Murphy said the event will raise funds and bring veterans together in remembrance.

He is walking in memory of his grandfather, a rifleman in the 12th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles, who was wounded on the first day of the Somme and later served in further campaigns.

The Somme Association maintains the Somme Museum in County Down, the Ulster Memorial Tower near Thiepval in France, and Thiepval Wood.

Thompson Travel in Portadown has sponsored 100 t-shirts for participants.

Donations for Air Ambulance NI will be collected along the routes; donations for the Somme Association can be made online.
