Ballougry Primary School in Derry will mark its 160th anniversary on 3 June with two performances of a show titled The Road We Take.

The morning event is for parents and trustees from The Honourable The Irish Society. The afternoon session is open to former pupils and the wider community, with displays of historic registers and photographs.

Pupils have created a wall display covering the school's timeline, including its opening in 1866, the arrival of running water in 1953, new classrooms in 1955, school dinners in 1956, and electricity in 1959.

Acting Principal Helen Cole said the school currently has 44 pupils and draws families from across the city due to smaller class sizes. She described a family atmosphere supported by long-serving staff and active parents and governors.

Cole said the community had previously campaigned to prevent closure. She called on Education Minister Paul Givan to review funding arrangements for small rural schools and said conversion to integrated status could support future growth.

Staff remain uncertain about employment because of ongoing questions over the school's viability.
