Unplaced Mid Ulster pupils miss settling-in days as minister pledges action
A number of children in Mid Ulster have yet to be allocated a post-primary school place, missing important settling-in days and leaving families uncertain about uniforms and preparations for the new academic year.
Education Minister Paul Givan acknowledged the situation in a letter to Mid Ulster District Council dated June 17. He said a small number of pupils remained unplaced, though the Education Authority was actively working with families and the figure had reduced since admissions concluded.
Mr Givan wrote that the authority was progressing alternative placements and appeals. He asked his officials to arrange a meeting with the council, the Education Authority and the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools to address local capacity pressures, admissions outcomes, transport issues and longer-term planning for the Clogher Valley area.
At a council meeting, Sinn Féin councillor Gildernew expressed concern about the delays. She said children had already missed introductory days at their prospective schools and had lost the chance to meet new classmates and decide on uniforms.
