Ballywalter Primary School opened a specialist classroom named The Cove on Thursday. The facility supports pupils with social communication needs in the Ards and North Down area.

The classroom provides smaller class sizes and higher adult-to-pupil ratios. Pupils follow tailored curricula that include one-to-one teaching in social skills, life skills, numeracy and literacy. Lessons often take place outdoors.

Principal Carolyn Craig stated the provision aids pupils with additional needs through customised learning while keeping them part of the mainstream school. Pupils join assemblies and playtime with others.

Community donations funded an outdoor classroom and toys for the unit. Teacher Briar Kennedy requested resources during setup, and locals from beyond the village contributed.

Strangford MLA Michelle McIlveen attended the opening. She called it an example of community support for inclusive education that builds understanding across the school.

Peninsula alderman Robert Adair also attended the event.
