A report by Sir Frank Atherton into cervical screening within the Southern Health and Social Care Trust has been published.

The report examines issues in the screening programme and the minister has considered its findings before reaching a decision.

Councillor Julie Flaherty said the report will reopen hurt and unanswered questions for women and families who placed trust in the system.

Flaherty stated that many will feel disappointed that the report cannot undo the pain, anxiety and loss experienced by families.

She called for accountability, transparency and learning lessons to remain priorities, along with proper support for those affected.

Flaherty highlighted the Ladies with Letters group and their families, who have campaigned for their voices to be heard.

She said confidence in the health system can be rebuilt through openness and a commitment that failures are never repeated, and urged attention to the Women's Health Strategy.
