Sinn Féin MLA Calls for Full Implementation of Cervical Screening Review Recommendations
Sinn Féin MLA Linda Dillon paid tribute to women who campaigned on failings in Northern Ireland's cervical screening service. She called for implementation of recommendations from a recent independent review and prior reviews to rebuild public trust.
Dillon expressed thoughts for women and families affected by pain and trauma from failures in the cervical screening programme. She noted that these women campaigned for years to have their voices heard and to establish facts about their experiences.
The MLA stated that the report confirms serious failings in the screening pathway. She said mistakes led to consequences for women and families.
Dillon recognised the courage of the campaigners in seeking answers and accountability. She credited their efforts with driving change.
She stressed the need for honesty, transparency and accountability. Dillon said every recommendation must be fully implemented and independently monitored to learn lessons and protect women.
Rebuilding confidence in screening services requires safe, effective and patient-centred care, according to Dillon. She highlighted the shift to primary HPV testing and laboratory oversight changes as key developments.
The MLA called for continued scrutiny and investment to maintain high care standards. She encouraged women to attend screening appointments, noting screening saves lives.
Dillon said honouring those affected means preventing such failures in future.
