A drag performer who hosted a children's storytelling event in east Belfast has received damages from a broadcaster after it aired footage from a protest.

Marcus Hunter-Neill, who performs as Lady Portia Di'Monte, said the coverage and subsequent abuse left him fearing for his life.

The event took place in August 2025 at Holywood Arches Library as part of the Eastside Arts Festival and featured Hunter-Neill along with another performer.

Police escorted the performers from the library after protesters gathered outside.

Hunter-Neill said he approached the protesters to discuss their concerns and explained that the session involved reading books and teaching basic sign language.

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons stated that the event was not appropriate for children and should not have taken place at a library.

TalkTV later retracted its comments, issued an apology, and paid Hunter-Neill substantial damages.

The event is not scheduled for this year due to safety concerns.

An actors' union has launched a campaign against political interference in the arts following the minister's comments.
