The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust operates an eight-week Greenspaces programme at Mount Stewart to aid physical and mental wellbeing. The pilot involves guided outdoor activities such as planting and seeding, along with social interaction. It partners with the National Trust at the site.

Participants explore the historic grounds and gardens during sessions. The programme aims to encourage time outdoors, skill learning, and connections in a calm setting. Service users engage with staff from Mount Stewart to gain knowledge and experience mindfulness.

Gwen Johnston, a participant, stated she enjoys gardening at Mount Stewart, being outdoors, and meeting new people as a widow. She expressed pleasure at securing a place on the programme.

Hannah Roach, Senior Social Work Practitioner at the Trust, described the partnership with the National Trust as important. She noted the programme offers access to green spaces, forests, and gardens to reduce daily stress. Roach called the experience positive for service users learning skills and staying active.

Roach reported strong interest from participants and plans for another programme in autumn.

Andrea McGlennon, another Senior Social Work Practitioner, said sessions include learning about the estate and garden history, followed by active outdoor work. She observed participants forming groups and showing keen interest. McGlennon hopes to continue the programme.
