Lisburn Councillor Reports Online Threats to Police
Lisburn and Castlereagh City Councillor Gary Hynds reported online messages to police that suggested his home location. The posts appeared on platform X and referenced a travel time of a couple of hours.
Councillor Hynds told reporters he supports free speech and ignores most online abuse. He considers these comments threats, particularly from an account that glorifies republican terrorism. He reported the matter to the PSNI for formal recording.
Chief Inspector Rocks of the PSNI confirmed receipt of the report. He stated the force does not discuss individual security arrangements. The PSNI aims to support politicians free from intimidation.
Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council contacted Councillor Hynds to provide support. The council deems abuse or threats against elected members unacceptable.
Joe Boyle, NAC Northern Ireland secretary, criticised Department for Communities Minister Gordon Lyons over lack of a protection plan for councillors facing intimidation. Boyle called for structured responses including security measures.
A Department for Communities spokesperson stated the minister condemns threats to councillors. The minister asked councils via SOLACE NI to develop security schemes. The department expects a sector-wide response.
