Andrew Baker, 36, from Templeburn Road near Crossgar in Co Down, attended Antrim Magistrates' Court in Ballymena on Tuesday.

Police detected Baker driving at 39mph in a 30mph zone near Belfast International Airport on September 23 last year. He held nine penalty points on his licence at the time.

Baker works as a performance manager. His barrister stated that his driving licence is essential for his job. The court received a reference for Baker.

District Judge Nigel Broderick addressed Baker, noting surprise at cases where drivers with nine points claim job reliance on their licence. The judge questioned why such drivers are not more cautious.

Broderick exercised discretion and did not impose a six-month ban for reaching twelve points. For this offence, he banned Baker from driving for one month and fined him £500. The existing nine penalty points stay on the licence.
