An 18-year-old motorist from Coleraine drove at 106mph on the M2 motorway near Antrim town, exceeding his probationary speed limit of 45mph. The incident occurred at 11.30pm on October 18. Kai Gibson, from Ashdale, appeared at Antrim Magistrates' Court in Ballymena on Tuesday.

Gibson passed his driving test in June and received three penalty points in September for speeding. He pleaded guilty to the charge. The court heard he drove to Belfast to assist a female who contacted him from outside premises, stating she felt disoriented after believing her drink was spiked.

District Judge Nigel Broderick imposed three penalty points and a £200 fine for the offence. Combined with prior points, Gibson now has six points. As a probationary driver, his licence faces revocation by the Driver and Vehicle Agency, requiring him to re-sit his test.
