Knocknagor Primary School Wins All-Ireland Irish Drama Title
Knocknagor Primary School in County Tyrone has become the first non-Irish speaking school from Northern Ireland to win a category at the All-Ireland Irish language drama festival Féile na nIonta. The school secured the victory in Mullingar on April 30.
All 46 pupils at the school, aged four to 11, took speaking and singing roles in the production of Na Trí Bhéar, an Irish version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Principal Briege Baxter received confirmation of the win via message as the group travelled home through Derrylin.
The school's path to the title started in March at Féile na hÓmaí in Strule Arts Centre. Pupils advanced after winning there, then claimed the Ulster final Féile Uladh in Letterkenny later that month.
Staff added more Irish dialogue and songs for the Ulster round. The entire school community attended the event by bus.
For the All-Ireland final, pupils arrived in Mullingar early, prepared costumes and props, and performed on the festival's final day. The group celebrated the win with a stop at a local restaurant and playground before returning to Trillick.
The school previously staged a production of Arabian Nights at Strule Arts Centre last year for its 90th anniversary.
