Antrim Hospital Bereavement Volunteers Named Runners-Up in Macmillan Awards
Four volunteers from the Macmillan Unit at Antrim Hospital received runners-up recognition in Macmillan Cancer Support's Thanks To You Awards. The team operates the Bereavement Call Service, which began in November 2024.
Helen Kernahan, Anne Orr, Mandy Bones and Clodagh Elliott contact families after a loved one dies from cancer in the unit. The service has assisted more than 150 families in Antrim and nearby areas. Volunteers offer emotional support, practical advice and details on local resources.
The women volunteered in the Macmillan Unit prior to joining the call service. Their role prevents families from feeling isolated post-hospital discharge.
Sharon O'Donnell and Nicola McAleese, volunteer coordinators at the hospital, noted the team's empathy strengthens care during grief. Chris Parker, head of volunteering at Macmillan Cancer Support, thanked the group for aiding families with emotions and challenges of loss.
Clodagh Elliott stated the service extends unit care to families after death. Helen Kernahan said calls allow sharing memories or emotions for comfort.
Macmillan runs various support services in Northern Ireland for those affected by cancer. Construction started on a new information and support centre at Antrim Hospital, set to open in spring 2027.
