Northern Ireland saw its 10th warmest April since 1884, with an average daily maximum temperature of 13.1C, 1.1C above the 30-year average. The month recorded 178.1 hours of sunshine, placing it 16th sunniest on record. Rainfall totalled 68mm, close to average.

The overall average temperature for April reached 8.6C, the 15th warmest since records began. This followed April 2025's 14.6C average daily maximum, the third warmest on record.

Prof Mark Bailey of Armagh Observatory noted the first swallows appeared near the observatory on April 15, with swifts on May 1.

A frosty night struck parts of Northern Ireland, with temperatures dropping to 1.5C in Castlederg, Co Tyrone. The year's lowest so far in the region hit -7C in Katesbridge, Co Down.

Nicola Maxey of the Met Office stated a chilly air mass covers the UK, causing temperatures below seasonal norms. She added clear skies and light winds led to sharp drops overnight, with possible patchy frost where skies clear.

Maxey noted such frosty nights occur in early May but current readings fall lower than typical. Northern Ireland faces mostly dry weather from Friday to Sunday, though showers or rain remain possible.
